The Dragon Boat Festival originated in China, and was originally held as a festival of totem sacrifice for the dragon totem worship tribes in the ancient baiyue region (the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze river and the south belt).Dragon Boat Festival and the Spring Festival, tomb-sweeping day, Mid-Autumn festival and known as the han Chinese four traditional festivals.

In May 2006, the Chinese state council listed it in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list.
In September 2009, the United Nations educational, scientific and cultural organization (UNESCO) formally considered and approved the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival as a world intangible cultural heritage, making it the first Chinese festival to be included in the world intangible cultural heritage list.
